Let’s talk about money.
For many of us, the word itself can bring a wave of anxiety. We’re told to budget, to save, to hustle—but so often, the conversation feels rooted in deprivation and fear. It feels like a chore, not a calling.
But what if we reframed it? What if managing your finances wasn’t about what you have to give up, but about the sovereign power you stand to gain? What if your bank account was not a source of stress, but the treasury of your kingdom?
In 2019, my own kingdom was on the brink. I was behind on several accounts, my creative business had come to an abrupt end, and on January 1st, 2020, I started the year with exactly $41.69 to my name. It was my breaking point, and it became my breakthrough. It was the moment I stopped letting my finances rule me and started my journey to becoming their sovereign.
This isn’t another boring budget post. This is the blueprint for a noble rebellion. Here are the three mindset shifts that took me from $41 to saving thousands, and from a state of panic to a state of peace.
Mindset Shift 1: Decree Radical Ownership
For years, I dabbled in financial tracking. I had the spreadsheets, but when things got hard, I stopped looking. It felt easier to ignore the reality than to face it, telling myself I’d “come back to it, eventually,” even as my credit score tanked and the phone wouldn’t stop ringing.
The breaking point was a gift. It forced me to make a sovereign choice: I would no longer be ruled by my finances; I would rule them. Since that day, I have tracked every single dollar that comes in and out of my life. This is not micromanagement; it is radical ownership. It is the act of a sovereign who demands to know the state of her kingdom at all times.
Knowledge doesn’t create panic; it alleviates it. When you know every corner of your treasury, the surprises of Murphy’s Law are no longer catastrophes that incite panic; they are simply variables that require a choice.
Mindset Shift 2: Architect Your Boundaries
When I first started my business in 2018, I made a crucial mistake: I co-mingled my personal and business finances. It was a recipe for chaos, and it took me a full year to take the foundational step of opening a separate business checking account.
Your business is a vital part of your kingdom, but it is not the entire kingdom. It needs its own treasury, its own walls, its own clear boundaries. A separate business bank account is non-negotiable. It is the architectural act of separating your personal sanctuary (the castle) from your professional empire (the kingdom). This separation isn’t just for tax purposes; it’s an act of respect for both your personal life and the professional entity you are building.
Mindset Shift 3: Design for Peace
A sovereign doesn’t just react to the needs of the kingdom; she anticipates them. After years of refinement, I’ve architected my own version of the classic “envelope system,” using dedicated bank accounts instead of paper.
As of today, I have four checking accounts, each with a noble purpose:
The Bills Account: The treasury for the kingdom’s essential operations.
The Business Account: The treasury for the empire’s growth.
The Emergency Account: The royal guard, ready for the unexpected.
The Enjoyment Account: The royal court, dedicated to joy, celebration, and living a life that feels as good as it looks.
This system isn’t about restriction; it’s about freedom. By giving every dollar a clear, noble purpose, I have removed the daily anxiety of spending. I am not constantly rethinking every purchase; I am simply operating within the beautiful, intentional system I designed.
This journey is not about perfection. It is about intention. By shifting your mindset from one of scarcity to one of sovereignty, you transform the act of managing money from a source of fear into the ultimate act of self-respect. You are not just building a budget; you are funding your vision.
